If you look straight ahead in the Arcades des Champs-Élysées you will see a Las Vegas-style shopping mall teeming with tourists lining up to buy Starbucks coffee and shop in cheap souvenir shops. If you look up, however, you will see a fabulous world of architectural details.
In early August I met a man who owns a shop that sells mint condition Art Deco and Art Nouveau furniture and objets. I told him about my fascination with Parisian street lanterns and he told me that some of the most beautiful lanterns in Paris were inside the Arcades des Champs-Élysées.
He was right. I was thrilled about my new find. I am guessing that it was built in the late 1920s or early 1930s.
