If you’re looking a French calendar for yourself or as a gift, try something more original than the ubiquitous Impressionist paintings, historic black and white photos, or Parisian aerial scenes. This year you’ll find a whole new crop of risqué calendars coming from the most interesting places. My favorite is the From’Girls Calendar, which features scantily clad ladies in farm settings with their favorite cheese. Yes, cheese; or “rural poetry” as the press release from the Association Fromages de Terroirs says so eloquently. All proceeds go to this association of family-owned, independent cheese makers from all over France. You can order it on the website or stop by their office at 43 rue Beaubourg, 75003.

As a wedding planner in Paris, I can’t tell you how many requests I get from panicky grooms-to-be looking for help on proposing to their bride-to-be at the top of the Eiffel Tower. One thing that I like to advise these guys is that a proposal, like amour, isn’t just about the payoff. 1 Pretty Spot + 4 Little Words + 2 Months Salary may = “yes”, but if in the end all she remembers is the bling, you’ve wasted a lot of time and energy! No, a truly unforgettable proposal requires a little foreplay. If you’ve decided to propose in Paris, you need to set the scene and completely immerse your future epouse in the sights, sounds and sentiments of Paris. Sure, the top of the Eiffel Tower is amazingly impressive, but wading through the endless lines of tourists and panhandlers to get there? Not so much. Here are my top 5 romantic spots to propose in Paris:

The Pont des Arts How could she say no to a proposal on one of the most enchanting bridges in Paris? The Pont des Arts is a wooden pedestrian bridge which leads to the Louvre and has the most amazing views of Paris (with the Eiffel Tower in the distance) and the Ile de la Cité. A little wine, a little baguette et fromage, the sun setting on the Seine…and she’s yours for the asking! And while you’re there, don’t forget to leave a Love Lock as a memento of your Parisian adventure.

The Canal St Martin This charming, tree-lined waterway in the 10th Arrondissement is still pretty much overlooked by tourists, especially in off-peak months. Built by Napoleon III in 1825 to transport materials from quarries in the north to the Seine, the waterway’s charming iron footbridges and locks are still standing, and set a romantic tone for a different type of wedding proposal. After checking out the “bohemian chic” shops and waterfront cafés along the Quais de Valmy and de Jenmapes, stroll on over to the Parc de la Villette and board a canal cruise- a tranquil 2 hour ride down the canal and out onto the Seine, where you’ll have plenty of opportunities to pop the question.

That is – a porn movie. There is, however, a hitch: The company that plans to make the movie doesn’t have any money. It is appealing for investors. The company is My Porn Production (what else?) and it needs €200,000. That is $276,000 / £172,000. It is apparently asking for donations of €50 ($70 / £43). And all who donate will be mentioned in the credits and will be invited to the premiere.
The former IMF head will be played by Roberto Malone (left), a 55-year-old Italian porn star. He will be called David Sex King, which will also be the title of the movie. DSK’s wife (Anne Sinclair) will be played by a Sandra Romain. The Sofitel maid—Nafi Diallo —will be played by Katia De Lys.
The US prosecutors dropped its sexual assault case against Strauss-Kahn, but he is still to face a US civil suit brought against him by Diallo. He walked here in France when police decided not to investigate a sexual-assault accusation against him made by Tristane Banon. Banon decided not to go after him in a civil case. Still, DSK is embroiled in yet another scandal that involves a prostitute ring that operated in and from the luxury Carlton Hotel in the Northern French city of Lille.
They’re the guys whose job it is to make sure a club has a good mix of people, preferably with lots of pretty, stylish girls and goodlooking, rich guys.

A, L and N, though, have been going to clubs in Paris since they were about 16. They come home at four, five or six in the morning reeking of cigarettes, tired and happy. N hangs out with an international crowd, often no two people of the same nationality in the group, and always seems to see Lindsay Lohan or people of that ilk at the next table. A and L have been several times to a girls-only club night where the pretty girls (ugly girls are refused entry) are offered free dinners, free drinks, a male-stripper show, and free makeup lessons. (Interesting that girls’ reaction to male strippers seems universally to be laughter.) Shortly before midnight, the club opens the doors to the guys… who have to pay at least 30 euros to get in. According to A, they skew quite a bit older than the girls, and look very rich.

“And … there are all these drunk, beautiful girls!” said A. She likes to go because it’s a free, amusing evening once in a while. She always comes home shortly after the guys arrive. (“They’re thirty years old!”)

A young couple that have obviously never had a “vis-a-vis” (neighbors that can see into their windows). How do I know this you may ask? WELL. Let me explain.

Not to put too fine a point on it, I’ve seen them regularly making out on the bed, but that’s not really the worst of it. I have seen my fair share of impetuous preliminaries on the streets of Paris. Who hasn’t? It’s practically a right of passage to see some tongue-baths in this town. Eventually, they get to more advanced techniques and draw the blinds. (Thank the lord.)

The worst part isn’t the bedroom… it’s their bathroom. (You see where I’m going with this.) In France the toilet is typically separate from the tub area, and I cannot express how truly grateful I am for this custom. But the problem remains: I have a view of their tub area.

Shockingly, this pair of unprudists have a curtain. What they don’t have, is a clue how to use it. It’s strategically placed 1/2-way folded down. It’s Pubes-R-Us over there.

Anon-nudists next door shower nightly, for which I’m very glad. Less stink on the metro is good for all. Unfortunately they spend an inordinate amount of time drying themselves in front of the window, where I have a front-row seat to the butt-crack show of a lifetime.

I could sell tickets to this, not kidding. The red-light district ain’t got nothing on my neighbors. But that’s the thing. You can’t not look.

Once you get over the surprise of seeing a never-published photograph of the Basic Instinct actress in the buff–and you stop looking for public hair that appears non-existent–your eyes are drawn to the face. It’s not exactly a come-hither stare. And that is where you start to understand the artistry Raul Vega‘s photography. The Los Angeles based photographer, noted for his portraiture, will open his first European solo exhibition this Thursday. “classicNeoclassic” is a mini-retrospective of images from his career, which began in the 1970s. But the photos of celebrities such as Demi Moore and Jim Carrey make up the minority of the show. There are also erotic art photos that Vega created as personal work when not producing commissions for Vogue, Time, Rolling Stone and InStyle. And a photo of a cloud that the New Yorker magazine used to illustrate the landmark feature on the light of Los Angeles. But the centerpiece of the new show is new work of digitally manipulated architectural abstractions. The images, which have been printed in limited-editiron series of 20, depict (for the most part) Los Angeles structure–and, impressively, its amazing light. The show of 18 images open this Thursday at 7 PM Transacmer, and is open to the public.

Through October 27 at 19 rue du Bac, 75007

The French equivalent of Daily Candy, the girly site and daily newsletter on little-known restaurants, shops, spas, services, and cultural institutions, has just published a book of its greatest hits—in English. My Little Paris: The Best Kept Parisian Secrets arrives very soon in bookshops, just in time to make your fall fabulous—socially, cerebrally, and style-wise. Among the gems it has unearthed (that have escaped even this humble blog) are a bar where you can have a cocktail created and named after you and a pool you can rent out just to yourself by the hour. It tells you where to get movie-set furniture, clothing made from scraps collected from the haute couture houses, and a pedicure performed by hungry fish. But the best pieces in My Little Paris are not about getting and spending. Did you know that you can have the mayor of the 18th arrondissement “non-marry” you and a companion? Or that a bar regularly features patrons reading classic poetry aloud? Sure, the guide prints raves of hipster institutions such as the concept shop Merci and the dead-stock novelty emporium Tombées du Camion. But most of the book is made up of unknown quirky delights of modern Parisian life, such as a service that photographs your apartment and turns the images into a coffeetable book. This succinct, well written, and beautifully illustrated guide is the best vehicle to becoming an instant insider in the City of Light.

They are buying a movie star’s apartment in central Paris.

The eldest is an aspiring actress, a pretty girl who speaks perfect English, has excellent credentials and had both talent and the support of her family, so I was surprised to find out the other day that she is leaving France to study something completely different abroad.

“What happened?” I said. “Your mother said things were going so well!”

“It was so discouraging,” she said. “Things were going well. Everyone is impressed with [her credentials] and I got lots of leads. But I discovered that the myth of the casting couch is not a myth. The directors who said they would put me in their movies or plays wanted sex first.

“Ninety percent of all the actresses you see in the movies got their first roles this way. Everyone knows it.”

It all started when Mr. Potato Thief tried to chat me up by asking me whether he should order fries. As a potato-lover, I scoffed at him and responded affirmatively with a resounding, “OF COURSE.” Mr. Potato Thief ultimately opted out of fries, citing the fact that he was “on a diet.” Again, I scoffed at him. What a pansy. When my order arrived, complete with samurai sauce, I was thrilled as peaches and proceeded to ignore him in order enjoy my meal. But Mr. Potato Thief had other ideas.

He got up very close to me, reached across my chest and jokingly made a play for my fries. All I remember feeling was this blind, hot rage, and the following things occurred:

1. I grabbed his wrist and slammed it down on the table.

2. With his pansy little wrist still firmly pinned to the table, I got up very close to his face and just growled, “DEGAGE.”

3. When his friend rushed to his defense and demanded to know what I was doing to him, I finally let go of his wrist and just responded, “He should’ve ordered his own fries.”

I’m not sure what Mr. Potato Thief and his friend got up to afterward. All I know is that the sympathetic kebab worker gave me extra fries to make up for being harassed by a potato thief. And that made everything right with the world.
