“That’s enough!” (Ca suffit!) European Commissioner Viviane Reding’s threat to impose sanctions on France may have backfired. Instead of apologizing for expelling Roma who are illegally occupying sites, French officials are insisting on their right to enforce the law. And if reader reactions are any indication they appear to be supported by large swaths of the French public.
An article in Le Figaro entitled ”EU threatens to sanction France for sending Rom back” drew comments hostile to the EU (883 comments less than 1 day after publication!) Many pointed out that the Commissioner in question, Vivane Reding, comes from Luxembourg, which, they claim, admits no Rom at all. Others asked what happened to the billions of Euros allocated to countries like Bulgaria and Romania to help them integrate the Roma. Billions? I thought the commentators must be exagerating (since obviously no integration has taken place). So I looked it up.
