Ve-Loot

velib-theftParis’ bike rental program, Velib, is having some problems. More than half of the bicycles have been stolen, vandalized or disappeared and at 400 euros each. Parent company JCDecaux is claiming that it cannot afford to continue the scheme unless the business model is changed. I’ve never used a Velib for a combination of reasons, but I think it’s a great idea and it would be a shame if it didn’t continue.

I live in yorkshire, England and I suspect that were a similar scheme set up here, 95% of bikes would have disappeared very quickly.

I agree. Today, my landlady took me to lunch with her son. Since he had to come over to the 12th from Montparnasse, he took a Velib, and then put it back into the Velib stand nearest our building. To reurn home, he just did the inverse. Wonderfully effective, good for the planet, and good for one’s health. I hope the company factors all this into their new business model.
