What is ‘American Sauce’?

amsauceparisblogIf someone asked you to define “American sauce,” what would you say? According to Heinz, it has tomatoes, shallots and parsley but is an odd shade of orange. And no, it’s not ketchup because that is labeled “ketchup.” And even with the strengthened value of the dollar (which yesterday afternoon was clocking in at $1.22 to the euro), I was not willing to drop 2.19 euros to find out.

We bought it in Germany. It’s a slightly spicy, vinegar-based sauce, a bit like traditional cocktail sauce with Thousand Island dressing, but we couldn’t say it was exactly like something else in the US. Kind of suspicious that it isn’t on their website. . .

I lived in Belgium for a while. Many different companies make American Sauce, and they all taste fairly similar, but the ingredients seem to vary pretty widely (some involving shellfish, some being much simpler and vegetarian, if not vegan). I mostly had the Manna American Sauce Either way, it’s absolutely delicious on shwarma, especially when combined with garlic sauce. I still miss my regular late night runs for shwarma met americaine saus.

Also, as you can imagine, all of my European friends were quite surprised to learn that we don’t have “American Sauce” in America.

Just had it. It was great. A bit like Thousand Island dressing light but truly a taste of its own. It was great with grilled chicken breast.

Based on the descriptions above, it sounds like its what most retail food locations like McDonalds consider “Secret Sauce (i.e. Thousand Island and Ketchup).

I saw this at carrefour and just *had* to buy it. I love faux-american stuff. As for the taste, It’s sort of like thousand Island. I did some googling and the sauce does in fact have American origins. They have a similar sauce in Utah for fries generally made with part mayo and part ketchup. The Heinz “American sauce” isnt’ exactly the same, but it’s actually not bad.

As an American, I don’t usually go for ketchup or Heinz products, but I would try this in a heartbeat. I really want to know what this is.
