Wintry Paris
Everyone’s marveling at today’s snowfall: “Flakes the size of latkes!” as one friend put it. So it’s the right moment look at Timeless Paris, the most wintry looking collection of Paris photographs I have come across. I’m not sure what Marian Crostic has done to her monument and garden landscapes; maybe sharpens them and selectively drains color. The result is icy though thought-provoking. To me the images call to mind the complex effect of the city’s architectural beauty. The imposing ornate exteriors seduce the eye but can shut out the heart. Most of the 19 shots are of the Tuileries, a place that, while central and open to the public, also feel impersonal. I wouldn’t call this book a crowd-pleaser, but it would be a palate-cleansing addition to any serious library of Paris picture books.
